GenerationXP

Launched in 2001, GenerationXP (GenXP) was a computer software qualification project that aimed to bridge the gap between school-based training and industry-standard qualifications.

As part of the Digital Opportunities initiative, GenXP was piloted in eight low to mid decile schools in West Auckland and Gisborne.

Students studied to competency level in the Microsoft Office suite of products to gain Microsoft Office Certification and credits on the NZQA framework, in addition to practical knowledge and skills that could be used in the workplace.

Technology partners Microsoft, Clear Communications (now Telstra Clear) and IBM supplied the schools with PCs, internet-access, software, professional development and technical support.

The project officially ended at the end of 2003, however many of the schools involved in the project are continuing with participation of their own accord.

The project also extended to include the range of CISCO qualifications which many students with a more practical bent in working with hardware and software have benefited from.
