Summary

MindSpring was implemented in early 2003 and was piloted by 20 schools with different decile ratings throughout the country.  In the 18 months since its inception, MindSpring has grown rapidly and is currently accessed by more than 7000 students and nearly 300 teachers from more than 60 schools.

Known as a Learning Gateway Environment, MindSpring uses Microsoft server products such as Class Server, Windows SharePoint Services and Microsoft Exchange 2003.  The integration of these products has created a sound structure that is user friendly, utilises technologies teachers are familiar with, and can be tailored to a particular school.

MindSpring can also be readily integrated with other computer systems that may be in use at a school.

Accessibility to the system is from any computer with a web browser, and 24x7 availability means students, teachers and parents can view, download, manage and upload information to MindSpring anytime they choose.

To ensure the integrity of MindSpring and safety of the users, access to the system is by password and levels of access are staggered.  Teachers and senior administrative staff have a high level of access while students have a lower level. 

Resources placed onto MindSpring can be benchmarked against NCEA Achievement Standards. This ensures quality and relevant resources are placed on the system.

Unisys New Zealand Ltd provides the platform and technical support for MindSpring.
