Kopu Project is an awards finalist

Congratulations to Opoutere School which is representing the Kopu Project as a finalist in this year’s Computerworld Excellence Awards category of Excellence in the Use of IT in Education: Primary and Secondary.

The Kopu Project, which involves seven schools from the Thames-Coromandel region, are investigating ways ICT can be incorporated into the curriculum to help support inquiry-based learning.  Leading the way is Opoutere School which is successfully using interactive whiteboards, wireless laptops and an online learning environment called Knowledge NET to help develop students into creative, critical and independent learners and thinkers.

The Kopu Project is also aiming to foster a ‘life long love of learning’ in each of the students that will extend beyond their school years and into their adult life.

Project facilitator, Wayne Howes, is delighted to be a finalist but says the Kopu Project is up against some stiff competition for the award.

“The competition is of an extremely high calibre, with some high profile projects in the running.  It is a privilege for our small rural schools to be participating at this level, and we know our project is making a difference to how our schools are teaching and our students are learning,” says Wayne.

Judges are due to visit the school on June 26 and the winner will be announced at an awards dinner being held at the Hyatt Hotel in Auckland on Friday, 21 July.
