Venture Southland

Supporting: Project ACTIVate

“This project is all about supporting innovative teaching practices in our schools.   The students in our schools are integral to the region’s prosperity and Venture Southland is proactive in supporting the education sector.  The project also links with Venture Southland’s facilitation role in Project Probe, the Connecting Communities Pilot Project and other regional initiatives.” – Wayne Duncan, Innovation Projects Manager, Venture Southland

Venture Southland is a joint committee of the Invercargill City, Southland and Gore District Councils and delivers Enterprise, Tourism, Events and Community Development services. Venture works with groups and organisations to identify opportunities and facilitate project developments that will enhance the prosperity and quality of life of within the Southland region.

Project ACTIVate originated in Southland when the first interactive whiteboards were demonstrated during Venture Southland Innovator Project seminars in July 2003.  With great vision from the Invercargill Licensing Trust, the Trust supplied the interactive whiteboards to schools in Invercargill and Venture Southland saw an ideal opportunity to help facilitate a project that would maximise the benefits of this resource to Invercargill students through the digital opportunities project.

The project will provide the opportunity for teachers and schools in Invercargill to develop innovative new digital opportunities within their classrooms. They will also be able to share these opportunities with other teachers in Invercargill, with the Northern Cluster schools in Auckland and Whangarei, and the wider education sector through publishing the outcomes.

Some of these opportunities will include:
• Distance Learning
• Facilitating improved resourcing of education via broadband and digital technology
• To develop education delivery skills and share these experiences with our project partners.

Teachers in the education sector are our greatest asset and collaborative projects such as this, that link business, regional government, and central government agencies will build this asset.   Project ACTIVate has the potential to push the boundaries of interactive learning both within a classroom environment and in interactive distance learning.
