And the winner is……

The Community Technicians’ Project took home the award in the Excellence in the Use of IT in a Community Project category at the IDG Computerworld Excellence in IT Awards held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Auckland recently.

Accepting the award was the Ministry of Education’s Community Technicians and Digital Opportunities project manager, Garry Falloon.

In front of a 400-strong audience, a visibly surprised Dr Falloon thanked the 10 Community Technicians participating in the pilot programme; technology partners, Microsoft, IBM, Renaissance/Itas, Telecom and course programme leader, Chris McCarthy and his team from qualification provider, the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology.

Dr Falloon said later that with the other category finalists being of an extremely high calibre the win was an outstanding achievement.

“Any of the finalists could have taken the award and we were all in with an equal chance, so I was absolutely delighted with the win, and all those involved with the Community Technicians’ project can feel justifiably proud,” said Dr Falloon.

The Community Technicians’ Project was the Award’s inaugural winner of the new category, and was sponsored by Wellington law firm Wigley & Co.
